Deadliest Warrior : Thrand's Spartan Vs. Ninja / Samurai Combat Highlights

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents:  Thrand and Eldgrimr's Response to Lock N' Load Blades

Thrand and Eldgrimr compare a a late century dueling Katana to a 9th century Viking long sword in response to the episode of Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey the Blades episode were they compare a 15th century European Long Sword against a earlier period Katana on a plate armor. The armor the episode used seemed questionable how easy it was pierced and the long sword like a later century dueling weapon from Renaissance era used for dueling with no armor and most likely not even sharp. Although double edged blades seem to Perice Armor easier due to taper point Thrand explains any sword hitting plate can do better depending on weight and either weapon in History Katana or longsword could beat the other depending on weight Katana can be 3 to 6.5 ponds and long sword can be about the same depending on era and design. The curve really makes no difference on plate only rigidity and weight and point design for thrust. Initial impact is every thing and neither sword really won on that program. By the Way guys the padding under the breast plate might have been a bit much we will test thrust again with out padding soon :P

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents: Reply to Axes

Thrand demonstrates a 28 foot axe throw, discusses the reverse bearded axe from the first video, throws the reverse bearded axe, and discusses the possibility that historical finds could have been mounted in the reverse fashion because no hafts have been found to determine the exact mounting of most axe heads.

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents:  Kanabo vs. Shield Test

This is compilation of all our best Kanabo test to dispute Deadliest Warrior Saying The Kanabo (Tetsubo)Two handed club or mace would break the Shield and arm of the Viking. The tests prove this wrong. It will not break the arm or shield.  The Historical shield being center grip and a composite of linden wood and two layers of heavy oxen raw hide, one on each side, and not strapped to the arm. The shield we test in this Video is made from 1/4" hard oak plywood made for SCA use and no broken arm or shield held by center boss and exact same weight.  To see an actual historical shield and how much more durable it was look up Weapons that Made Britain The Shield on youtube. The Viking round stopped the Dane axe easily which is worse than a Kanabo by far.

There is no Historical Documentation of Samurai using Kanabo that I have found pre-19th century and from non contemporary sources if you find anything please notify us via our webpage or youtube. Meaning Samurai did not use them, This came from Deadliest Warrior :P

This was done for a request and we are waiting on our new Cam to produce better Videos.

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents: Deadliest Warrior:  Thrand's Reply to Roman vs. Rajput Part 2 of 2

Thrand explains more on the differences of butted and riveted mail and that DW should not have been using butted Chain or mail because there is no historical proof they would have used it or did use it. All historical chain or mail was riveted or sealed shut. Butted mail no matter how thick of gauge will still unbend when hit or thrust. This also a reply in an attempt to unconfused some people who did not understand this from the first Video. The Chain armor tested is 16 gauge 5/16" rings silver soldered or braised shut and is stronger than the Butted chain used in the Rajput Vs. Roman episode that was supposed to be 12 gauge and would have been way to heavy to wear at that gauge.

Mail armor provided an effective defense against slashing blows by an edged weapon and penetration by thrusting and piercing weapons; in fact The Royal Armory at Leeds concluded that "... it is almost impossible to penetrate using any conventional medieval weapon..."

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents: Deadliest Warrior: Thrand's Reply to Roman vs. Rajput Part 1 of 2

Thrand show's once again that butted or unriveted chain armor was not used historically and why. In Deadliest Warriors clip Insides out they test Butted mail or chain this is a bogus test and not historical at all.He also demonstrates that plain leather with padding would stop hacking just as well but not thrust. chain or mail armor did stop arrows and thrust from weapons.Only extreme force could penetrate riveted mail it was not a Tee Shirt like Deadliest Warrior would have you believe. Ancient peoples would not have preferred it over leather, hard leather and early plates if it did not work. An Apache knife will not pierce it either :P

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents:  Deadliest Warrior:  Viking vs. Samurai Thrand's Reply

Thrand Reply's to common comments about his previous videos.Although a lot of this seemed like common since. Thrand explains it to some viewers who did not understand why he believes the 9th century Sword and shield style to have advantage over the Katana and naginata in single comabt. We don not believe the samurai would have even used the katana or the naginata but we are addressing this to show Deadliest warrior's mistake if he had in the out come. The Samurai would have used the Yumi(Bow) and Yari(spear) and possibly a much longer sword like the tachi or nodachi. The Samurai's art Kyuba no michi ("The Way of Horse and Bow") being a mounted warrior not a foot soldier. The Katana was a later century dueling sword after the feudal era. There is no record of them using Kanabo or Kanabo-Jutsu either.

Thrand and Eldgrimr's Well of Remembrance Presents:  Deadliest Warrior:  Viking vs. Samurai Thrand's Extras

Thrand Cuts a 300lbs Oryx neck with a long sword and Katana to test damage.Thrand also test cutting through deer leg bones with Viking Long Sword and Katana as well coming to conclusion the Long sword was more devastating. All done to the Song Real World By Bruce Dickinson the King of Skalds!!!!!!!!

Thrand was told all he does is tap fights he wanted to show you that's not true. Steel fighters Hit with control not to kill each other .SCA fighters go full force with rattan swords. It has been recognized as extreme fighting with weapons as a sport fighting martial art. Plus there is some extra clips all set to music Manowar Sleipnir . Set back enjoy the fun of all out fighting with long swords and shields in armor. This is by no means saying Steel fighting is not a good and viable way to practice and I Enjoy it as well but I have no local group at the time you should do both :P
